US Embassy Tightens Student Visa Process with Mandatory Public Social Media Vetting

Ghanaian students aspiring to study in the United States must now comply with a new requirement: make their social media profiles public ahead of visa interviews. The policy, newly formalised by the U.S. Embassy in Accra, marks a significant shift in the scrutiny of student visa applications, intensifying the vetting process under a rising tide of global migration concerns.

In an exclusive interview with Joy News, U.S. Consul General Elliot Fertik confirmed that the Embassy has begun actively using social media assessments as a standard part of the evaluation process for student visa applicants. While social media checks have always been available to consular officers, Fertik said this renewed focus brings a more deliberate and structured approach.

“We reserve the right to engage in social media vetting for any visa applicant; however, under the current administration, we are focusing in particular on social media vetting for students,” Fertik stated.

The policy aims to offer U.S. officials a broader understanding of who applicants are beyond the documents submitted, particularly in light of recent global trends of visa overstays and fraud. According to Fertik, this broader perspective includes reviewing online behavior, which could weigh either for or against a visa decision.

He did not rule out the possibility that controversial or anti-American content posted online could affect an applicant’s eligibility.

“It could,” Fertik said plainly. “Every case is individual… the embassy considers the whole circumstances.”

Despite its seriousness, Fertik dismissed fears that the policy infringes on free speech or targets innocent users. Rather, he described it as a “practical measure” that helps differentiate legitimate applicants from those who may pose risks to U.S. immigration rules.

Overstays, Fraud and Heavy Penalties

The Consul General issued a strong warning to would-be overstayers or those who breach the terms of their visa.

“It could impact their future eligibility for a visa. It could incur a penalty of not being able to enter the United States for a certain period of time up to and including life,” he cautioned.

He also noted that applicants involved in fraud or criminal activity may face prosecution and sanctions that go far beyond visa revocation.

Fertik highlighted that such infractions do not only affect individuals but also damage the reputation of Ghanaians seeking honest academic opportunities.

Avoid ‘Fixers’, Fake Promises

The Embassy also used the opportunity to address widespread exploitation by so-called “visa consultants” or “agents” promising backdoor access to expedited appointments or guaranteed approvals.

“They are lying; they are ripping you off,” Fertik said, recounting several cases in which hopeful students lost substantial sums to fraudsters.

He emphasised that all visa processes are handled strictly through official U.S. government channels, with no shortcuts or hidden options.

What Officers Really Look For

In light of the increased scrutiny, Fertik encouraged prospective students to concentrate on articulating their academic goals and funding plans during their interviews.

“During most interviews, they are short, and the officer makes their decision based on what you say during the interviews—not whatever documents you bring.”

He advised applicants to be well-prepared to speak clearly about their chosen courses, future plans, and how they will pay for the high cost of studying in the U.S.

No Quotas, But High Demand

Addressing concerns about rejection rates and the difficulty in securing appointments, Fertik rejected speculation that there is a quota system or hidden bias at play.

“There are no quotas; there’s no decision ahead of time who will get visas and who will not.”

The real challenge, he explained, is the massive surge in demand. Between 2019 and 2023, the number of people paying visa fees tripled. As a result, many applicants are unable to secure interview dates in time.

“We will not be able to interview everyone who wants a visa interview,” Fertik admitted, urging applicants to apply well in advance and manage their expectations.

As the U.S. tightens its vetting processes for student applicants, the Embassy’s message is clear: honesty, transparency, and preparedness remain the most reliable path to securing a visa.
