Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson Okojie has paid an emotional tribute to veteran Nigerian actor Francis Duru following his death, describing herself as too tired and speechless to express her grief over the loss.
Johnson took to Instagram on Friday, October 23, 2026, to mourn the celebrated actor, sharing a black image bearing the words, “Rest well legend.”
In her accompanying caption, the actress wrote: “I am too tired and speechless of this loss,” a brief but emotional message that has resonated with fans and colleagues mourning the veteran actor.
Her tribute has drawn attention to the profound sense of loss within the Nigerian film industry following the death of one of Nollywood’s respected actors.
Duru, who was 57, reportedly died on Friday after a brief illness, according to a statement issued by his family on his official Instagram account.
His death marks the end of a career spanning more than three decades, during which he established himself as a prominent figure in Nigeria’s film industry.
He was widely remembered for his portrayal of Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s classic film Rattlesnake, released in 1995. The role helped cement his place in Nollywood and contributed to his reputation as a versatile performer.
Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru built a career that extended beyond acting into leadership and advocacy.
In 2007, he received the United Nations Ambassador of Peace Award in recognition of his positive influence on young people.
He was also appointed interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010. In the same year, he received a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.
Beyond his professional achievements, Duru was a husband and father. He is survived by his wife and children.
His death comes about two years after the tragic loss of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in 2024, adding another painful chapter to the family’s history of bereavement.
As tributes continue to emerge, Johnson’s heartfelt message reflects the grief of colleagues, fans and admirers who have lost an actor whose contributions helped shape Nollywood over several decades.
