National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving: Leaders Call for Unity Beyond Politics

As preparations intensify for Ghana’s upcoming National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving (NDPT), key political figures and organizers have emphasized the importance of maintaining a spirit of unity and non-partisanship throughout the event.

The gathering, designed to unite Christians, Muslims, and other faith groups under the shared theme “Reflect, Reset, and Renew for National Prosperity,” aims to transcend political divides and foster national harmony.

Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during a courtesy visit by the NDPT planning committee, urged all participants and organizers to keep the event free from political slogans and party symbols. He warned that partisan displays or politically charged remarks would undermine the true purpose of the day — national gratitude and unity.

Highlighting the significance of peace in the aftermath of the recent elections, Mr. Frimpong remarked, “The fact that, even after a highly competitive election, we continue to enjoy peace and harmony is a clear indication that God has special plans for Ghana.” He added that although the NPP did not win the elections, members have expressed their gratitude through an internal “Thank You Tour,” underscoring a shared commitment to the nation’s wellbeing beyond party lines.

Echoing the call for national cohesion, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stressed the critical need to re-establish strong moral values as the foundation for nation-building. He warned that the increasing influence of money in politics threatens to erode leadership integrity, urging a return to governance grounded in ethical principles. “If we do not confront this culture where leadership is bought and morality is sidelined, we are heading towards serious national trouble,” he cautioned.

Mr. Nketia also called for national leaders to develop clear, unified values that will guide governance, youth development, and Ghana’s future prosperity.

On the organizational front, Mr. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Chairman of the NDPT Committee, emphasized the event’s spiritual and unifying purpose. He noted that the initiative reflects the President’s appreciation for the role traditional authorities play in safeguarding peace during politically sensitive periods. To preserve a politically neutral atmosphere, Mr. Ankrah encouraged attendees to wear white or Ghana’s national colors, rather than party paraphernalia.

Scheduled to take place simultaneously across all 16 regions and 266 districts, the NDPT will feature Christian prayers at the State House forecourt and Muslim prayers at the National Mosque, symbolizing interfaith collaboration for Ghana’s prosperity.

As Ghana pauses to reflect and give thanks, the concerted message from leaders and organizers alike is clear: this national celebration is about the collective strength and unity of the Ghanaian people—transcending politics to build a brighter future for all.
