NDC Mobilizes Full Campaign Force for Ablekuma North Rerun Amid Electoral Tensions

As the countdown begins to the crucial parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is intensifying its campaign efforts, with party leadership rallying behind candidate Ewurabena Aubynn in what has become a high-stakes contest.

The rerun—slated for Friday, July 11—will see voters in 19 polling stations within the constituency return to the polls after the Electoral Commission (EC) nullified the previous results due to procedural irregularities and chaos at the collation centre during the December 7, 2024, general election.

Edem Agbana, the NDC Member of Parliament for Ketu North, declared the party’s unwavering commitment to reclaiming the seat, stating that “every available legal, strategic and grassroots tool” would be used to secure a win for their candidate.

“This rerun represents a second chance to correct an injustice,” Agbana said on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue. “Ewurabena Aubynn has the support of the people, and the NDC is fully mobilized to protect the will of the voters.”

The EC’s decision followed a prolonged dispute between the NDC and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the legitimacy of Pink Sheets used in the initial collation. The original documents were reportedly destroyed in a chaotic incident at the collation centre, leaving only scanned copies.

While the NPP argued that most polling station results were uncontested and verifiable, the NDC maintained that the use of scanned and allegedly unauthenticated Pink Sheets compromised the process. After meeting with both parties, the EC decided that a rerun in the most disputed 19 polling stations was the best route to preserve the integrity of the results.

Deputy EC Chair Samuel Tettey, in a July 2 statement, emphasized the commission’s aim to avoid drawn-out court cases and to deliver a transparent and credible rerun.

Security will be a top priority, with the Ghana Police Service deploying officers across the affected polling stations to prevent violence or intimidation. Both parties have been urged to respect the process and conduct themselves peacefully.

For the NDC, however, this rerun is more than just a parliamentary seat—it’s a litmus test of public trust in the EC and a chance to energize its base ahead of 2028.

“This election is about accountability and truth,” Agbana added. “We owe it to the voters of Ablekuma North to ensure their voices are genuinely heard.”

As the nation watches, Ablekuma North has once again become the battleground for competing narratives of electoral justice—and the outcome on July 11 could reverberate far beyond its 19 polling stations.
