In a move signalling possible generational renewal within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Greater Accra Regional Chairman Divine Otoo Agorhom has declared he will not seek re-election in the party’s upcoming internal polls.
Mr. Agorhom made the announcement during an appearance on Channel One TV’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Tuesday, July 22, bringing to a close an eight-year tenure marked by both victories and setbacks in Ghana’s most competitive political region.
“I’m not running again this time. It is a decision that I have taken. I have done two terms,” he stated. “I’m looking to other interests.”
The decision comes as the NPP begins a period of internal restructuring and soul-searching following its loss in the 2024 general elections. As the party prepares for a new electoral cycle, Agorhom’s exit opens the door for fresh contenders and potentially new ideas in a region pivotal to any party’s national success.
During his tenure, Agorhom steered the party through two crucial elections and helped maintain the NPP’s presence in a region known for its swing-voter dynamics. Despite the recent setback in 2024, his leadership was considered instrumental in mobilising grassroots support and coordinating campaign strategies across the capital.
Party insiders say his decision not to seek re-election could encourage younger party members and fresh voices to step forward, injecting renewed energy into the NPP’s regional leadership.
With Agorhom hinting at new political pursuits, speculation is already swirling about what his next move might be—and who will emerge to fill the vacuum he leaves behind.
Observers view this transition as part of a broader shift within the NPP, which is expected to evaluate its leadership at all levels as it rebuilds for the future.
