As the global discourse on Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance deepens, Mobile Web Ghana is emerging as a key player advocating for Africa’s interests and inclusive digital development on the world stage.
The tech and entrepreneurship hub based in Accra joined over 40 global organisations, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), GIZ, KfW, and Smart Africa, to officially endorse the Hamburg Declaration on Responsible Artificial Intelligence for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The endorsement was made during the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, which convened governments, civil society groups, tech leaders, academia, and development agencies to shape a unified global approach to ethical AI deployment — with a clear focus on aligning innovations with the 2030 Agenda.
At the heart of Africa’s representation was Madam Florence Toffa, Director of Mobile Web Ghana, whose presence at the high-level gathering reinforced the organisation’s pivotal role in ensuring African perspectives, particularly those of women and youth, are not left behind in global digital policy formulation.
“The future of AI must be inclusive, ethical, and equitable — and that means building it with the active participation of underrepresented regions like Africa,” Madam Toffa emphasized during the conference.
Pushing for Locally Relevant, Globally Informed AI
Madam Toffa shared Mobile Web Ghana’s upcoming initiative to establish AI learning hubs in local schools, targeting young innovators and female students. The goal: to create grassroots solutions to development challenges using AI while embedding responsible and ethical design from the start.
“We want our young people — especially girls — to see themselves as creators of technology, not just consumers,” she added.
Mobile Web Ghana also extended an invitation for partnerships and cross-border collaboration, calling on institutions, civil society actors, and international agencies to support efforts that advance responsible, human-centred, and climate-conscious AI in Africa.
A Global Framework with Local Relevance
The Hamburg Declaration outlines principles for inclusive and sustainable AI deployment, covering themes such as data equity, human rights safeguards, climate-smart infrastructure, and digital inclusion — all of which resonate with Africa’s current digital transformation needs.
Mobile Web Ghana’s endorsement of the Declaration signifies more than policy alignment; it’s a strategic positioning of African stakeholders as co-creators of global AI norms, not mere recipients of foreign frameworks.
Since its founding in 2010, Mobile Web Ghana has become a regional force in innovation, empowering youth with digital skills and equipping organisations with open-data tools to address local challenges.
Africa’s Moment in the AI Conversation
The participation of Mobile Web Ghana in the Hamburg Conference signals a broader shift — one where African organisations are stepping forward as thought leaders, influencing how transformative technologies like AI can and should be developed globally.
As international AI policy solidifies, initiatives like those led by Mobile Web Ghana ensure that the continent’s values — from inclusivity to community-driven innovation — help shape the digital future.
