The Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Abena Asare, has stepped down from overseeing the committee’s review of Ghana’s 2024 public accounts, citing a potential conflict of interest.
In her opening statement, Ms. Asare noted that her previous role as Deputy Minister of Finance in 2024 could affect her impartiality as the committee examines the Auditor-General’s Report on the Public Accounts of Ghana for the year ending December 31, 2024.
The PAC’s hearings will scrutinize the financial management of major government institutions, including the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation and the National Information Technology Agency (NITA).
Ms. Asare emphasized that her decision was motivated by a commitment to upholding the integrity and credibility of the parliamentary oversight process. “Recusal in this instance is necessary to ensure that our work remains impartial and transparent,” she said.
Her action has been welcomed by parliamentary observers as a demonstration of accountability and ethical governance, setting a precedent for maintaining trust in key oversight mechanisms.
