A tragic road accident at Asikuma Junction in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region has left five people dead, while four others are receiving treatment after being rescued by emergency teams. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed the fatalities on Tuesday through an official statement.
The incident occurred when a grey Toyota Noah (GX 422-25) collided with a tipper truck (GT 725-19), leaving passengers trapped in the wreckage. A rescue team, led by AstnO Fred Aganu and supported by Acting District Fire Officer ADO I Godwin Gbedemah, rushed to the scene after a distress call was placed to the Peki Fire Station.
Despite the severity of the crash, firefighters were able to extract four survivors — including a child — and hand them over to the National Ambulance Service for immediate transfer to the Peki Government Hospital.
GNFS noted that five other occupants, unfortunately, had no signs of life when rescuers reached them. Their bodies have since been released to the police.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for improved road safety and heightened vigilance among drivers, particularly on highways in the Eastern Corridor, where heavy-duty vehicles frequently travel.
Emergency services are urging the public to promptly contact authorities during road accidents, stressing that rapid response can significantly increase survival chances — as witnessed in Tuesday’s rescue operation.
