Anyako-Konu Community Celebrates Historic Water Project After 23 Years of Scarcity

The residents of Anyako-Konu in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region have welcomed a major boost to their water supply with the commissioning of the Anyako Konu Seva water project, ending more than two decades of water scarcity and related health challenges.

Togbi Tenge Dzokoto Gligui VII, Dufia of Anyako-Konu and Paramount Chief of the Amugo-Vego Traditional Area, described the project as a long-awaited milestone that would significantly improve living conditions and curb water-borne diseases in the community.

The traditional leader expressed deep gratitude to the royal families who donated the land for the water facility, emphasizing that their commitment was crucial to bringing the project to fruition. He also praised the resilience of the community, noting that residents had endured nearly 23 years without reliable water while maintaining health and community cohesion.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Togbi Gligui revealed that he was unable to attend the commissioning ceremony due to a legal injunction over land disputes but prioritized the smooth handover of water services to his people. “Out of respect for the law and to avoid controversy, I chose to remain in my palace to allow the commissioning to proceed smoothly so the community can receive water,” he said.

The Chief acknowledged the Ghana Water Company for maintaining the system over the years and recognized the Rural Water Agency for taking over operations to ensure consistent water flow throughout the township. He also thanked government officials, including President John Dramani Mahama, the Volta Regional Minister James Gunu, the Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, and the Minister for Water and Sanitation, for their efforts in making the project a reality.

The project, featuring a 60,000-litre mechanized water system, was initially commissioned in 2023 in collaboration with the previous administration. Togbi Gligui urged the community to take ownership of the facility, comply with payment regulations, and support sustainable water management to ensure long-term operations.

He emphasized that the project represents a model for future water interventions in the municipality, bringing hope, improved health, and economic benefits to Anyako-Konu, Konu, and Seva. The Chief called on the Ghana Water Company and the Community Water and Sanitation Agency to maintain the system for its projected 300-year lifespan, ensuring continued access to safe and reliable water.

The successful commissioning of the Anyako Konu Seva project has been celebrated as a historic achievement and a turning point in addressing chronic water scarcity in the area, marking a new era of improved living standards for the residents.
