Government has defended the decision to single-source some roads under the Big Push infrastructure programme, citing the need for rapid intervention on critical stretches left in poor condition.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson and Member of Parliament for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese, explained that several inherited projects had stalled after funding sources dried up due to Ghana’s ongoing debt challenges. Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints, he noted that 23 road projects had already been awarded but remained incomplete because banks and financial institutions withdrew support.
“The funding sources ceased. The banks or the institutions that we were taking the money from… said they were not going to touch us in the long term,” he said, highlighting how stalled financing left roads in limbo, including the notorious Pokwasi to Nsawam stretch.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stressed that waiting for a full competitive tender process, which can take up to nine months, was impractical for roads in urgent need of repair. “If we are going to do something about this road, you simply need to fast track it,” he added, defending the single-sourcing approach as necessary to ensure public safety and restore critical infrastructure quickly.
