First Deputy Speaker Raises Alarm Over Erosion of Ghanaian Culture at May Day Event

First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Bernard Ahiafor has warned that Ghana’s cultural identity is gradually being eroded as local languages, traditional attire and values continue to lose ground to foreign influences.

Speaking on behalf of Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin at the 2026 May Day celebration held at Parliament House in Accra, Mr Ahiafor expressed concern over the growing preference for foreign fashion over traditional Ghanaian garments.

“Traditional garments are symbols of our heritage which store our dignity,” he stated, lamenting what he described as the gradual disappearance of cultural elements from public spaces and media platforms.

Addressing staff of the Parliamentary Service under the theme “Welcome Home,” the Akatsi South Constituency MP stressed that work and culture are deeply connected and urged public servants to uphold values such as honesty, integrity, resilience and respect.

He said the theme was intended to encourage workers to reconnect with their roots, families and communities while applying the values they learned at home to national service.

Clerk to Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror also assured staff that the Parliamentary Service would continue to prioritise welfare and professional development.

Meanwhile, Abla Dzifa Gomashie said her ministry remained committed to creating policies and programmes that would promote growth in Ghana’s tourism, culture and creative sectors.

The event formed part of activities marking International Workers’ Day, celebrated globally to honour workers and the labour movement.
