AGI Pushes Government to Expand Renewable Energy Incentives for Industry

The Association of Ghana Industries has urged the Government to introduce stronger incentives for renewable energy investments to help industries manage rising energy demands and support Ghana’s industrialisation drive.

According to the Association, expanding tax reliefs on renewable energy technologies, improving access to affordable green financing and simplifying regulatory processes would encourage more businesses to invest in sustainable power solutions.

Speaking at a sustainable energy business-to-business expo in Accra on the theme, “Powering Industry Through Sustainable Energy,” AGI President, Dr Kofi Nsiah-Poku, stressed that reliable electricity supply remained essential for sustaining industrial growth and advancing the Government’s 24-hour economy agenda.

He said industries could no longer depend solely on conventional energy sources and must embrace cleaner and more efficient alternatives to remain competitive.

Dr Nsiah-Poku noted that the AGI had established an Energy Service Centre to provide businesses with technical support and energy efficiency solutions aimed at reducing operational costs and improving productivity.

The Director of Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Seth Mahu, also called on businesses to adopt hybrid energy systems to address persistent power supply challenges.

He explained that renewable energy investments, particularly in solar and energy storage systems, could improve efficiency, lower operating costs and strengthen companies’ environmental sustainability ratings.

Mr Mahu observed that solar energy alone could only provide effective generation for about five hours daily, making energy storage and hybrid systems critical for uninterrupted industrial operations.

He disclosed that the Ministry was working with partners to strengthen the national grid and accelerate renewable energy integration, with a target of achieving at least 1,400 megawatts of installed renewable energy capacity.

According to him, Ghana currently has about 350 megawatts installed, while projects in the pipeline could deliver close to 600 megawatts by 2028.

Mr Mahu further revealed that the Ministry had introduced interventions such as a renewable energy fund to support decarbonisation efforts within the energy sector.

He also highlighted the launch of a net metering web application portal under the Scaling-Up Renewable Energy Programme, which allows solar photovoltaic users to export excess electricity to the national grid and receive credits to offset electricity bills.

The expo brought together industry players, renewable energy companies and policymakers to explore sustainable energy solutions for Ghana’s industrial sector.
