The Awutu Bereku District Police Command, led by Superintendent Edmond Nyamekye, has arrested a young couple in connection with the death of their newborn baby at Awutu Bontrase in the Central Region.
The suspects, identified as 22-year-old Abena Benewa and 26-year-old Bright Ashiao, are reported to have delivered the child at home before circumstances surrounding the infant’s death raised community concern.
According to reports, neighbours became alarmed after the baby had not been seen for several days. Suspicion deepened when the lifeless body of the infant was later discovered at a refuse dump in the community, with some parts reportedly missing.
The discovery triggered a police investigation, leading to the arrest of the couple for questioning.
An eyewitness account suggested that the father initially told residents the baby had died naturally and was buried at the dump site, although his subsequent statements to police reportedly differed from his earlier explanation.
The Assemblyman for the Bontrase Electoral Area, Prince Larbie, confirmed that the suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
Police say inquiries are ongoing to establish the exact cause of death and to determine whether any ritual-related circumstances may be involved in the case.
