May-Borns Union Gains Legal Status to Expand Community Development Work

The Union of May Borns (UMABO), a social welfare group made up of individuals born in May, has officially been granted legal status following its incorporation by the Office of the Registrar of Companies under the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992).

The registration, completed on May 5, 2025, marks a major milestone for the organisation after 15 years of informal community-driven activities, and is expected to enhance its capacity to undertake structured social interventions and partnerships.

The announcement was made by the Global President of UMABO, William Nlanjerbor Jalulah, during the group’s end-of-month celebration in Bolgatanga, where the Certificate of Incorporation was formally outdoored.

He described the legal recognition as a turning point that will enable the union to operate with stronger institutional structures, attract support from corporate organisations, and expand its community development initiatives.

According to him, the incorporation now allows UMABO to open formal bank accounts, manage project funds transparently, and engage development partners more effectively in pursuing larger-scale programmes.

He added that the group is considering constitutional reforms to align its governance structure with its new legal status and future ambitions.

UMABO traces its origins to 2010, when the idea emerged during a radio programme hosted in Bolgatanga, where increased birthday call-ins inspired the creation of a network for people born in May.

What began as informal interactions eventually evolved into a structured organisation, with its first official meeting held in 2011 and an interim leadership elected to guide its activities.

Over the years, the union has been involved in a range of social initiatives, including blood donation exercises, health walks, clean-up campaigns, football matches, and welfare support for members.

A signature activity of the group is its annual donation of essential items to newborn babies in health facilities across the Upper East Region.

As part of this year’s celebrations, UMABO presented items to 76 newborns at the Upper East Regional Hospital, Bongo District Hospital, and Talensi District Hospital.

Mr. Jalulah said the initiative remains central to the group’s mission because it directly supports mothers and families while reinforcing its commitment to community service.

Looking ahead, he said the union plans to establish a support fund for members and intensify fundraising efforts to finance future development projects.

He also encouraged broader participation, noting that UMABO’s constitution allows associate membership for individuals who share its vision, regardless of birth month.
