Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has suggested that rivalries in the music industry should be viewed as a form of promotion rather than division, arguing that competition between artistes can ultimately strengthen the entertainment scene.
He shared the view during a visit to the Ghana High Commission in the United Kingdom ahead of a scheduled concert in August, where he reflected on the role of rivalry in shaping Ghana’s music culture.
According to him, disagreements and “beefs” between artistes are natural in the industry and should not be seen purely in a negative light, but rather as moments that can later be celebrated and turned into opportunities.
Shatta Wale referenced his long-standing rivalry with fellow dancehall artiste Stonebwoy, noting that despite their differences, he still holds respect for him and views him as a younger colleague in the industry.
He argued that such rivalries, when managed well, can generate public interest, energise fan bases, and even create major entertainment events that benefit the industry as a whole.
The musician further encouraged stakeholders around Stonebwoy to help reshape perceptions of their rivalry, suggesting that it could be transformed into a positive, large-scale musical collaboration or event in the future.
Shatta Wale maintained that while competition is inevitable in creative industries, maintaining peace and mutual respect after disagreements is essential for long-term growth.
His comments add to ongoing conversations about one of Ghana’s most publicised music rivalries, with many industry observers continuing to debate whether such tensions hinder or help the growth of the entertainment sector.
