The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has charged the newly installed Paramount Chief of Agona, Obiri Komfo Anokye Boakye II, to uphold the dignity of the Agona Stool and safeguard the customs and traditions of the Asante Kingdom.
Speaking at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi during the swearing-in ceremony of the new Agonahene before the Asanteman Traditional Council on Monday, June 29, 2026, the Asantehene described the Agona Stool as one of the kingdom’s most revered traditional institutions, stressing that it carries significant cultural, spiritual and governance responsibilities.
He explained that the stool was not merely ceremonial but served as an important pillar in preserving Asante customs, providing counsel on governance issues, and supporting the spiritual direction of the kingdom.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II urged the new chief to approach the office with humility, discipline and reverence, noting that the position demanded unwavering commitment to the values and traditions of Asanteman.
He encouraged Obiri Komfo Anokye Boakye II to foster unity among chiefs and the people while serving as a vital link between the traditional leadership and local communities, particularly in matters requiring consultation, consensus and respect for customary practices.
The Asantehene also highlighted the importance of preserving palace protocols, performing traditional rites and ensuring active participation in major cultural events that strengthen social cohesion across the kingdom.
He further assured the Agonahene of his guidance and support as he settles into office, expressing optimism that the kingdom could soon witness the revival of the Odwira Festival after decades, describing it as an important step towards strengthening cultural identity and preserving Asante heritage.
Obiri Komfo Anokye Boakye II, who succeeds the late Nana Frimpong Anokye Ababio, pledged his loyalty to the Golden Stool and the Asantehene, promising to discharge his responsibilities with dedication, integrity and humility.
He also committed to working with fellow chiefs to promote unity and ensure that the traditions and values associated with the Agona Stool are upheld for future generations.
