Ghanaian singer Stephanie Benson has spoken candidly about the personal strength and determination that shaped her decision to undergo surgery following cancer diagnoses affecting her uterus and breast.
In an interview on Changes on Joy News, hosted by Nikki Samonas, Benson recalled how she readily accepted her doctor’s recommendation that removing the affected organs was among the available treatment options.
According to the singer, her cancer journey began with a diagnosis involving her uterus, before doctors discovered cancer in her breast weeks later.
Faced with the possibility of losing both organs, Benson said she made her decision without hesitation, stressing that the choice concerned her body and her health.
“The option is to, you know, remove your uterus and your breast. And I said, ‘I’ll take that one.’ I mean, for me, it was a quick decision,” she recounted.
Benson said her husband was present when the decision was discussed, but she did not feel compelled to seek his approval before deciding on the course of treatment.
“I didn’t even look at his face. I’m not going to ask him. He’s not his body, it’s mine,” she said.
Surgery and recovery brought difficult moments
The singer acknowledged that the surgery and recovery process were far from easy, explaining that complications kept her in hospital for several weeks.
Despite the physical and emotional challenges associated with the experience, Benson said she did not consider her breasts to be the defining feature of her identity.
“I feel like I’m not my breast, so it’s not going to kill me,” she stated.
Her comments reflect her determination to place her health and survival above concerns about changes to her physical appearance.
Benson also spoke humorously about how her husband might respond to her changed body, saying she would not force him to remain in the relationship if he became uncomfortable with her appearance.
“If my husband doesn’t want to look at it, he can go,” she said. “Honestly, I told him that.”
However, she indicated that her husband had continued to support her through the experience.
Through her account, Benson has offered a personal glimpse into the difficult choices that can accompany a cancer diagnosis, emphasising her right to make decisions about her body while navigating treatment and recovery.
