Controversial Nigerian street-hop star Portable has once again found himself at the center of legal and social media storms after being convicted on three counts—including assault and resisting arrest—but avoiding jail time with the payment of a mere ₦30,000 fine.
The charges stem from a 2023 altercation at Odogwu Bar in Ilogbo, Ogun State, where the singer was accused of assaulting Inspector Hammed Moshood, leaving the officer injured. Portable’s initial refusal to comply with arrest procedures led to a dramatic standoff, culminating in his eventual remand and subsequent trial at the Ifo Magistrate Court.
While the court sentenced him to three months in prison, he was given the option of a fine, which he promptly paid—triggering a wave of criticism and online debate over what many consider a slap on the wrist.
The ruling has polarized public opinion, with some arguing that the fine undermines the seriousness of assaulting law enforcement, while others view it as consistent with the artist’s pattern of escaping major consequences.
Portable’s camp has yet to release an official statement, but this verdict adds to the artist’s string of legal woes. He recently secured a ₦2 million bail in a separate dispute with the Ogun State government and is currently facing a defamation suit from Fuji music legend Saheed Osupa.
Known for his headline-grabbing antics as much as his music, Portable’s legal drama continues to test the line between celebrity behavior and accountability in Nigeria’s justice system.
