A Plus Apologises for Personal Attacks on Attorney General

Gomoa Central MP Kwame Asare-Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has publicly apologised to Attorney General and Bolgatanga East MP, Dr Dominic Ayine, following a social media storm that erupted over bribery allegations and personal insults.

The controversy began earlier this week when a post from an X (formerly Twitter) account bearing A Plus’s name accused Dr Ayine of offering a GH₵500,000 bribe to the Appointments Committee of Parliament. The post, which also featured crude insults—referring to Ayine as a “stupid man” and “old fool”—was widely condemned by the public and political observers.

However, in a detailed statement released via his verified Facebook page, A Plus clarified that the incendiary X post did not originate from him but from a fake account impersonating him. He provided a link to the fraudulent profile, emphasizing that while it bore his name and image, he had no control over its content.

“The statements currently in circulation originated from a fraudulent Twitter (X) account impersonating me,” A Plus stated, warning the public not to mistake it for his official voice. He urged Ghanaians to refer to his verified Facebook account for accurate representations of his views.

Despite distancing himself from the bribery claim, A Plus acknowledged authorship of a Facebook post that used inflammatory language in response to Dr Ayine’s remarks at a press conference. In that post, he lashed out at the Attorney General, believing that Ayine had relied on the fake X post to level accusations against him.

“Upon reflection, I acknowledge that the tone and choice of words I used were inappropriate,” he admitted, offering an unreserved apology to Dr Ayine and the general public. He further described the Attorney General as a “respected senior colleague” and said his comments did not reflect the decorum expected of a Member of Parliament.

In a rare public gesture of remorse, A Plus revealed that he had taken down the controversial Facebook post—a move he said was driven by respect and a desire to correct the narrative.

He also used the moment to reaffirm his commitment to fighting corruption but stressed the importance of doing so with integrity and mutual respect. “The fight against corruption remains a critical priority for the NDC government. But it must be conducted with fairness, transparency, and decency,” he said.

Addressing accusations of involvement in a National Service Secretariat (NSS) scandal—an issue raised by Dr Ayine—A Plus firmly denied any wrongdoing. He explained that his only interaction with the case was providing media support to a man who claimed he was falsely accused, adding that similar advocacy efforts had been extended to political figures across party lines.

The apology and clarification appear to have defused tensions for now, although the incident highlights the growing challenge of misinformation via impersonation on social media—especially for public figures.

The MP concluded by calling for unity among lawmakers and urged all stakeholders to prioritise national interest over partisan conflict.
