The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced that the High Court has officially lifted an arrest warrant against Kwasi Asante, the Director of Passports, bringing clarity and closure to his alleged connection to a passport fraud case involving one Mr. Dominic Williams.
In a statement released on Thursday, May 23, the Ministry emphasized that the allegations stemmed from activities that occurred well before Mr. Asante assumed his current role on August 19, 2024.
“The matter has been fully resolved, and the Director of Passports has been cleared of any wrongdoing,” the statement affirmed, stressing that the controversial issuance of multiple passports to Mr. Williams happened years before Mr. Asante’s appointment.
Records confirm that Mr. Williams first obtained a Ghanaian passport over a decade ago, with the most recent renewal processed in January 2024—eight months prior to the current Director’s tenure.
The Ministry lauded the Judiciary for what it described as a timely and impartial resolution, noting that the exoneration helps reaffirm trust in the justice system and the institution’s leadership.
In response to the controversy, the Ministry reiterated its commitment to reinforcing internal checks at the Passport Office, aiming to bolster security and maintain the integrity of Ghana’s passport issuance system.
“This incident has highlighted the importance of system improvements, and we are actively working to safeguard the process from future abuse,” the Ministry noted.
The dropped warrant marks a turning point in the case, which had initially triggered public concern over accountability and fraud in the issuance of official travel documents. With the Director now cleared, efforts are underway to restore public confidence in the Passport Office and its operations.
