New Force Under Scrutiny as Assault by Security Personnel Sparks Outrage

The New Force political movement is facing mounting public backlash after one of its security personnel was caught on camera assaulting an unarmed civilian during the funeral rites of the late Mamponghene over the weekend—an incident that has ignited serious concerns over political accountability and the use of force by non-state actors.

The viral video, widely shared on social media, shows a plain-clothed man identified as a New Force security operative physically attacking a civilian who had attempted to approach the movement’s figurehead, Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar. The footage has sparked criticism from civil society, human rights groups, and concerned citizens.

In response, the New Force issued a formal apology on Monday, distancing itself from the violent actions and acknowledging a failure in judgment and protocol. The statement, signed by General Secretary Charles Yomekpe, described the attack as “saddening and disturbing,” and emphasized that the individual involved posed no threat and should have been treated with dignity.

“Violence has no place in a democracy,” the statement read. “Every citizen has the right to approach, engage, and express themselves without fear of assault.”

The New Force’s leadership has promised a full internal investigation and pledged that the offending security member will be held legally and administratively accountable. However, questions remain about how such a breach occurred, and what systems of oversight exist within emerging political movements that wield organized security presence.

Broader Concerns About Political Vigilantism

The incident has reignited public concerns about vigilante-style political security arrangements and the lack of clear guidelines for non-state political operatives operating in public spaces. Analysts say the case underscores the urgency of regulating the conduct of private security in political organizations, especially those projecting themselves as alternatives to mainstream parties.

Political commentator Kwame Sarpong noted, “This is not just about one rogue individual—it’s about a movement’s responsibility to uphold the rule of law. Any group seeking political power must first show that it respects human rights and democratic values.”

Despite the apology, some observers say the New Force’s credibility has taken a hit, especially among undecided voters who expected the movement to distinguish itself through transparency and people-centered leadership.

“They’ve done the right thing by apologizing, but damage has been done,” said Ruth Mensah, a governance researcher. “This is a moment for them to prove they’re serious about accountability, not just optics.”

The Movement has thanked the public for its vigilance and promised to institute stricter security protocols going forward.

As Ghana moves closer to its next general election, this incident serves as a critical reminder of the need for all political actors to uphold civil liberties, lawful conduct, and ethical leadership.
