Broadcasting Shake-Up: NCA Cracks Down on Over 60 Non-Compliant FM Stations

A wave of silence has hit the airwaves as the National Communications Authority (NCA) enforces a sweeping regulatory clampdown on more than 60 FM radio stations nationwide, including well-known media outlets Asaase Radio and Wontumi FM.

The stations have been ordered to suspend operations immediately, following revelations of widespread breaches of Ghana’s Electronic Communications Act and its associated regulations. The NCA’s latest audit, sanctioned by a ministerial directive, exposed a host of compliance failures, prompting one of the most significant enforcement actions in the country’s broadcasting history.

Major Offenders Include High-Profile Names

It has been confirmed that Asaase Radio (99.5 FM), a key player in Accra’s media scene, has already gone off air. Other affected stations span multiple regions, reflecting what the NCA describes as a “pattern of systemic non-compliance.”

A Breakdown of the Infractions

The NCA’s audit report paints a sobering picture:

  • 28 stations were operating with expired licences.
  • 14 stations, despite receiving authorisation, failed to commence broadcasting within the mandatory two-year window.
  • 13 stations had only provisional authorisation, although they had paid the required licence fees.
  • 7 stations paid provisional fees but failed to meet key technical and administrative requirements under Regulation 54—preventing the issuance of final authorisation.

An Industry at a Crossroads

While the NCA’s move has sparked concern among media stakeholders and listeners, the regulator insists the action is necessary to uphold industry standards and ensure fair competition.

“This is about reinforcing the rule of law in the communications sector,” said an NCA spokesperson. “Broadcasting is a public trust. Stations must adhere strictly to licensing conditions to continue operating.”

What’s Next?

The NCA has reiterated that only broadcasters fully compliant with licensing terms will be allowed to operate going forward. The authority also hinted at more inspections and stricter enforcement mechanisms in the coming months.

The crackdown is a clear signal to Ghana’s broadcasting sector: regulatory leniency is over, and compliance is non-negotiable.

Industry watchers believe this move could trigger a reset in Ghana’s radio ecosystem—one that prioritises professionalism, accountability, and legal integrity in the use of public broadcasting frequencies.
