The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is considering relinquishing its direct role in gold purchases, paving the way for a soon-to-be-established Gold Board to take over bullion procurement, according to Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Dr. Asiama stated that the move aims to enhance efficiency, improve transparency, and streamline the management of Ghana’s gold resources.
“The central bank may remove itself from the programme to purchase bullion and hand the role to a soon-to-be-established Gold Board,” he said.
Enhancing Gold Sector Oversight
The creation of a dedicated Gold Board is expected to provide a structured and specialised framework for managing gold transactions, ensuring that the procurement process is properly regulated and optimised.
Key expected benefits of the Gold Board include:
- Improved transparency in gold transactions.
- Better regulation and oversight of gold procurement.
- Optimisation of gold purchases to strengthen national reserves.
The decision aligns with the government’s broader economic reforms aimed at strengthening Ghana’s gold industry, which remains a key contributor to the country’s economy.
Industry Analysts Welcome the Move
Experts believe that shifting gold procurement from the central bank to a dedicated Gold Board will enhance operational efficiency and allow the BoG to focus on core monetary policy functions rather than commodity market management.
With Ghana being one of the world’s leading gold producers, stakeholders are optimistic that the establishment of the Gold Board will ensure that the nation maximises the economic benefits of its gold resources while maintaining financial stability.
