A tragic road accident believed to have been caused by reckless overtaking has claimed four lives—three schoolchildren and a taxi driver—at Natwibuw on the Winneba-Apam highway in the Central Region.
The heartbreaking incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Monday, as the students were on their way home from school. The victims were identified as pupils of Uncle Rich and St. Paul basic schools.
According to eyewitnesses, a Toyota Rav4 with registration number GN 5507-18 attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre and collided head-on with a taxi cab registered CR 748-20, which was carrying the children. The impact was devastating, leading to the immediate death of the taxi driver, whose body had to be painstakingly retrieved by emergency services.
One of the students also died at the scene. Two others succumbed to their injuries later at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, raising the death toll to four. Two surviving students are currently receiving medical care at the same facility.
Residents and commuters along the Winneba-Apam stretch have long raised concerns about reckless driving on the highway. Monday’s accident has reignited calls for stricter traffic enforcement and road safety measures in the area.
The incident serves as a grim reminder of the deadly consequences of impatience and disregard for road rules.
