Ga Dzasetse Urges National House of Chiefs to Honour Court Ruling and Uphold Chieftaincy Integrity

The Dzasetse of the Ga Paramount Stool, Nii Yaotey Oto Ga II, has issued a strong call to the National House of Chiefs to respect recent judicial rulings and restore Nii Tackie Adama Latse II to the national register as the legitimate Ga Mantse, warning that failure to do so undermines the authority and constitutional credibility of the House.

His appeal follows a June 12 ruling by the Court of Appeal ordering the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi to reinstate Nii Latse II’s name within 14 days. The appellate court upheld an earlier 2021 High Court decision, which found that the removal of Nii Latse II from the national register was done without any valid evidence of destoolment—a key constitutional and customary requirement.

Despite these rulings, the National House of Chiefs has taken the matter to the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn both judgments—a move that has drawn sharp criticism from traditional leaders and stakeholders in the Ga State.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Nii Yaotey Oto Ga II—via a statement read on his behalf by Deputy Secretary Mr. Theophilus Kingsley Quartey—described the actions of the National House of Chiefs as “unconstitutional and embarrassing.”

Citing Article 270(3)(b) of the 1992 Constitution, he reminded the House of its mandate to operate a fair and transparent system of chieftaincy registration and public notification, insisting that the judicial decision must be respected.

“King Tackie Adama Latse II was duly enstooled in 2011 following the death of the late Ga Mantse, Boni Nii Amugi II, and was officially gazetted in 2015,” he said, further noting that he was subsequently inducted into the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs in 2017.

Nii Oto Ga II condemned the subsequent installation of King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II as “unlawful,” arguing that such developments threaten peace and cohesion within the Ga State and discredit the neutrality expected of the National House of Chiefs.

He called on the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, to step in and mediate the growing tensions to safeguard justice and traditional harmony.

Also speaking at the event, Naa Ode Adenku I, Development Queen of Akanmaje and spokesperson for the Coalition of Ga Queen Mothers, appealed to queen mothers and the youth to remain neutral and avoid inflammatory actions or language that could deepen divisions.

“We need peace, unity and stability—not chaos and confusion,” she said, urging all stakeholders to “pursue dialogue and harmony over division and confrontation.”

As the National House of Chiefs awaits the Supreme Court’s determination, pressure is mounting on it to honour the constitutional and judicial frameworks that underpin its very existence, with traditional leaders warning that continued resistance to lawful orders could erode public confidence in the chieftaincy institution itself.
