Volta Regional Minister James Gunu Returns to His Roots, Inspires Pupils with Acts of Gratitude and Hope

In a powerful symbol of humility and service, Volta Regional Minister Mr. James Gunu returned to his childhood school — Papa Otempong Memorial School, formerly Okadjakrom L/A Basic School — to reconnect with his roots and offer support to the next generation of learners.

Rather than a routine political visit, Mr. Gunu’s appearance was deeply personal and symbolic, marked by emotional reflection and a firm commitment to educational equity in rural communities.

“This is where it all began for me — these classrooms, these teachers, this community. Returning here isn’t a ceremony; it’s a responsibility,” the Minister told teachers and pupils during his address.

Giving Back to Build Forward

The Minister donated teaching and learning materials, including exercise books, pens, and other essential stationery. The donation, he said, was more than a gift — it was an investment in the dreams of the children currently sitting where he once sat.

“No child should feel small because of where they were born. Every child should be allowed to dream big — because I am proof that it’s possible,” Mr. Gunu said.

He encouraged pupils to remain focused and reminded them that humble beginnings can produce greatness, urging them to see their current environment not as a limitation, but as a launchpad.

A Call to Other Leaders

In a broader message, Mr. Gunu called on other public officials, alumni, and professionals across the country to “return to their roots” and support local schools that shaped their paths.

“Let this visit serve as a reminder that true leadership begins with gratitude. The best way we can honour our past is by lifting others who are coming after us,” he added.

Local Reception and Community Engagement

Teachers and students were visibly moved by the visit. Many expressed how rare it was for someone of Mr. Gunu’s stature to acknowledge his foundational school in such a tangible and heartfelt way.

“This is the kind of motivation our pupils need,” one teacher remarked. “Knowing that a Minister once sat in the same chairs they now occupy will inspire them to aim higher.”

The visit also included engagements with community leaders and education stakeholders, where Mr. Gunu reiterated the government’s commitment to bridging the educational divide between rural and urban Ghana.

A Journey That Comes Full Circle

From a schoolboy in Okadjakrom to a Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu’s journey is a testament to the power of education and the impact of community. His visit was not only a gesture of generosity — it was a lesson in gratitude, service, and possibility.

As he left the school grounds, students waved and chanted his name, not just in admiration of a leader, but in celebration of a hometown hero who never forgot where he came from.
