Ghana will today bid farewell to two distinguished Muslim statesmen who lost their lives in the August 6 military helicopter crash, as the nation continues to grieve the loss of eight eminent citizens.
Former Minister for Environment, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala, and former Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, will be laid to rest this afternoon in line with Islamic tradition.
The solemn rites will begin with Janazah prayers at 2:00 p.m. at the Forecourt of the State House, followed by interment at the Military Cemetery in Accra at 2:30 p.m. The ceremony is expected to bring together Ghanaians from all walks of life — political leaders, religious figures, traditional authorities, and grieving families — in a unified expression of loss and solidarity.
President John Mahama, Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Speaker of Parliament, and senior government officials will join the National Chief Imam and the leader of the Ambariya Sunni Group to honour the departed.
Today’s burial marks the first in a series of national mourning events, culminating in an inter-denominational state funeral at the Black Star Square on Friday, August 15, 2025, where the country will collectively celebrate the lives and service of all eight victims.
In the shadow of tragedy, Ghana’s diverse faiths and communities stand together — united in grief, bound by respect, and determined to preserve the legacy of those who served the nation with distinction.
