The University of Ghana’s Governing Council has promoted Daniel K. Dzidzienyo, Acting Director of the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), to the rank of Associate Professor in Plant Biotechnology—an achievement he credits not only to hard work, but also to mentorship, collaboration, and family support.
In a heartfelt message following the announcement, Prof Dzidzienyo singled out the role of mentors in shaping his academic journey, giving “special mention” to Prof Eric Danquah, whom he described as the “Grand Mentor.” He also acknowledged his colleagues, students, and family, stressing that academic success is never achieved in isolation.
“This milestone reminds me that the journey of academic and research excellence is never walked alone,” he said. “I am grateful to my mentors for their guidance, my students for their inspiration, and my family for their unwavering support.”
Prof Dzidzienyo’s promotion has been hailed within Ghana’s academic community as another boost for Plant Biotechnology research at UG and across Africa. As Acting Director of WACCI, he has played a central role in advancing innovation in crop science and building the capacity of young researchers across the continent.
Looking ahead, he expressed a strong commitment to deepening his contributions to knowledge creation and innovation. He also used the occasion to encourage younger scholars to persevere. “To my students and younger colleagues: keep pushing, stay focused—your time will surely come,” he advised.
Beyond the recognition of his personal achievement, many observers note that his elevation to Associate Professor is also a testament to the University of Ghana’s growing leadership in agricultural research and biotechnology.
