PRINPAG Warns of Media Collapse Risk Amid Shrinking Revenue and Rising Threats to Press Freedom

The Private Newspaper and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has raised a red flag over the sustainability of independent journalism in Ghana, warning that severe financial pressures and a lack of adequate investment could erode the media’s ability to protect democracy and inform the public.

In a strongly-worded statement to mark World News Day 2025, the association said Ghanaian media houses—particularly privately owned outlets—are struggling to survive amid dwindling advertising revenues, operational cost surges, and increasing threats to editorial independence.

“Publishers remain the gatekeepers of information, champions of diverse views, and defenders of free speech. Yet they are operating under near-impossible conditions,” the statement signed by PRINPAG President, David Tamakloe, lamented.

Media as a Pillar of Democracy – But For How Long?

While hailing the role of publishers in shaping public discourse and holding power to account, PRINPAG painted a bleak picture of the current state of the media, suggesting that without urgent and sustained investment, the collapse of independent journalism is imminent.

“Without their work, our society would risk disorder,” the association warned.

According to PRINPAG, the economic hardship facing the sector is weakening its watchdog role—posing a direct threat to Ghana’s democratic credentials and public accountability systems.

Call to Action: Invest in Journalism or Risk Losing It

As media organisations navigate shrinking budgets, PRINPAG is urging government, businesses, civil society, and development partners to step up and support the sector—not just through words, but through financial backing, advertising, and capacity-building support.

“We commend those who continue to invest in the media through advertisements and other support mechanisms,” the association noted. “But more is needed to sustain access to accurate and timely information.”

In particular, the group called for investment in digital transformation, technological infrastructure, and training programmes, especially for smaller publishers and online news platforms.

Journalists Must Also Do Their Part

While advocating for greater support, PRINPAG also acknowledged the need for media professionals to uphold high ethical standards and embrace constructive criticism.

“As we mark this day, we recognize the need for constant improvement. Publishers must adopt technology, strengthen professionalism, and remain accountable to the public trust,” the statement read.

A Global Moment, A Local Crisis

World News Day, spearheaded by the Canadian Journalism Foundation and the World Editors Forum, is marked annually on September 28 to spotlight the critical role of journalism in truth-telling, democracy, and public service.

But for Ghana, this year’s theme comes at a time when journalists are grappling with increased political pressure, legal threats, and an uncertain financial future—a combination that many fear could lead to self-censorship or closure of independent outlets.

PRINPAG’s message is clear: supporting journalism is not just about defending a profession—it’s about safeguarding Ghana’s democracy.
