UNESCO Recognition of Highlife Opens New Economic and Cultural Pathways for Ghana

Ghana’s Highlife music has not only received global cultural recognition but is now positioned to drive major opportunities in the country’s creative economy following its inscription on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

The decision, announced on Wednesday, November 10, is expected to influence national policy, tourism strategies and creative industry investments, with stakeholders predicting a revival of cultural infrastructure linked to Highlife’s history.

UNESCO’s endorsement elevates Highlife from a beloved national art form to an internationally protected cultural asset — a shift that analysts say could attract new funding for music preservation, museums, research centres, and youth-oriented music education programmes.

Cultural policymakers argue that the inscription gives Ghana a stronger platform to market its identity on the global stage. The recognition aligns with ongoing pushes for a Creative Arts Fund, revitalised intellectual property systems, and expanded cultural tourism beyond festivals and monuments.

For scholars and archivists, the listing strengthens efforts to document the century-long evolution of Highlife, from palm-wine roots to the dance-band era and later contemporary fusion. Decades of contributions from legends such as E.T. Mensah, Nana Ampadu, A.B. Crentsil, Paapa Yankson, Amakye Dede, Kojo Antwi and others now carry renewed academic and heritage value.

Industry figures say the UNESCO honour can also catalyse new business opportunities. With Afrobeats’ global rise and strong Highlife DNA underpinning many modern sounds, the genre’s protected status could encourage collaborations, licensing, film soundtracks, and cross-continental music projects.

Beyond economics, cultural experts note that the listing reinforces Highlife’s role as a repository of Ghanaian memory — its lyrics chronicling migration, urbanisation, love, morality and everyday social life. Its preservation ensures that these stories remain accessible to future generations.

As Ghana positions itself as a cultural powerhouse in Africa, Highlife’s new status may become a strategic asset — not only to celebrate the past, but to drive innovation, education and international cultural diplomacy in the years ahead.
