President John Dramani Mahama, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, has made changes to the military leadership, appointing new acting Service Chiefs. This move, pending consultation with the Council of State, marks a significant shift in the command structure of the country’s armed forces.
The newly appointed acting Service Chiefs are:
- Brigadier General William Agyapong – Acting Chief of the Defence Staff
- Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu – Acting Chief of Army Staff
- Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing – Acting Chief of Naval Staff
- Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong – Acting Chief of Air Staff
- Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan – Acting Chief of Staff
These appointments will take effect from March 24, 2025.
Earlier today, President Mahama met with the outgoing Service Chiefs, led by Chief of the Defence Staff General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, at the Flagstaff House. During the meeting, the President expressed his gratitude for their dedicated service and assured them of his continued reliance on their expertise to help reset Ghana.
The changes come at a time when the country is focusing on strengthening its national security and modernizing the armed forces. The new appointees bring a wealth of experience and leadership to their roles, and their appointments are expected to enhance the operational effectiveness of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The announcement was made by Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP), Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
More updates will follow as the new Service Chiefs assume their responsibilities in the coming days.
