China to Grant Zero-Tariff Access to African Exports as Ghana–China Trade Hits $14.1bn

China has announced plans to grant zero-tariff treatment to exports from 53 African countries with diplomatic relations with Beijing, a move expected to expand market access and strengthen trade ties across the continent.

The policy, which will take effect from May 1, 2026, was disclosed by Li Yang during celebrations marking the Lantern Festival and the Chinese New Year in Accra.

Mr Li said the initiative formed part of China’s broader commitment to strengthening economic cooperation with African countries through frameworks such as the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation and high-quality collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative.

He noted that the policy would provide new opportunities for African exporters and support economic development across the continent.

The announcement comes as trade relations between Ghana and China continue to expand, with bilateral trade reaching a record $14.1 billion — representing a year-on-year increase of more than 19.3 per cent.

Mr Li said the growth reflected the deepening strategic partnership between the two countries and the increasing collaboration in areas such as manufacturing, infrastructure, technology and education.

According to him, Chinese enterprises operating in Ghana have continued to expand their investments, establishing new production lines and supporting the country’s industrialisation drive.

“These developments have played an important role in supporting Ghana’s industrialisation and socio-economic development,” he said.

The event, which brought together members of the Chinese community, Ghanaian officials, diplomats and business leaders, also featured cultural performances by the Anhui Performing Arts Group from China.

The celebration formed part of activities highlighting cultural exchange and the long-standing diplomatic relations between Ghana and China, which this year mark their 66th anniversary.

Speaking at the event as special guest, Ernest Brogya Genfi commended the Chinese community for its contributions to Ghana’s economic growth.

He noted that Chinese investments in sectors including manufacturing, retail, hospitality and mining had created jobs and strengthened economic cooperation between the two countries.

Mr Genfi expressed optimism that the expanding trade volumes, investments and cultural exchanges would further deepen the partnership and sustain the longstanding friendship between Ghana and China.
