Family of Deceased Seamstress Seeks Transparency in Investigation

The family of the late Gloria Awatey is calling for greater transparency in the investigation into her death at Adawso in the Eastern Region.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Dodowa, her mother, Millicent Dadebo, appealed to the Ghana Police Service to ensure a thorough and open investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Madam Dadebo said the family was still seeking clarity on the findings of the post-mortem examination conducted after her daughter’s death.

She recounted that on Thursday, January 8, 2026, her daughter, a seamstress, called to say she was tired after a long day completing sewing orders for clients and intended to rest.

Later that night, she said she received information that Gloria had collapsed in her room and was found foaming at the mouth. According to her, a young man in the community reportedly heard Gloria shouting before she collapsed.

Residents who responded to the incident suspected poisoning and attempted to administer palm oil as a first aid measure before rushing her to a nearby clinic.

However, Gloria was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the facility.

Madam Dadebo said the family was informed that a post-mortem examination would be conducted to determine the cause of death.

She stated that although medical personnel had initially indicated that both families would be briefed on the autopsy results, the family had yet to receive official information about the findings.

According to her, they later learned that the report had been forwarded to the police.

The case also involved Gloria’s partner, Ernest Klonu, who, according to Madam Dadebo, had been mentioned in an allegation raised by the deceased’s seven-year-old daughter.

The child reportedly claimed she saw her father mixing a substance that Gloria was made to drink before the incident. However, Mr Klonu has denied the allegation and maintained that he was not present at the time.

Madam Dadebo said the suspect had secured legal representation and was later granted bail after the autopsy reportedly indicated that no poisonous substance had been detected.

She also alleged that prior to her death, Gloria had confided in her about threats from her partner and had been advised to report the matter to the police.

According to her, Gloria later returned to live with him after he pleaded with the family.

The deceased left behind three children, who are currently being cared for by relatives, with the youngest staying with Madam Dadebo.

She said the family was seeking clarity on the circumstances of the death and appealed to authorities, including the Inspector-General of Police, to ensure that the investigation is handled transparently.
