Ghana Leads Global Push at UN General Assembly to Declare Slave Trade Humanity’s Gravest Crime

Ghana is stepping onto the global stage with a bold diplomatic push that could reshape how the world officially remembers and addresses the legacy of slavery.

Under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama, the country plans to present a landmark resolution at the United Nations General Assembly on March 25, 2026. The proposal seeks to formally recognize the Transatlantic Slave Trade as the gravest crime against humanity—a designation supporters say is long overdue.

The timing is symbolic. The vote is expected to coincide with the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, underscoring the global significance of the issue.

Rather than acting alone, Ghana is championing the effort on behalf of the African Union, working closely with the Caribbean Community and diaspora groups. This coalition reflects a broader movement demanding not just recognition, but concrete steps toward reparatory justice.

If passed, the resolution would be unprecedented. Despite decades of discussion, the UN has never adopted a comprehensive resolution specifically addressing the Transatlantic Slave Trade in its 80-year history. Ghana’s proposal aims to change that by highlighting the scale, brutality, and long-lasting global impact of slavery.

Beyond symbolism, the initiative is part of a larger strategy. Ghana is positioning itself at the forefront of international calls for accountability, linking the resolution to the African Union’s upcoming Decade of Action on Reparations and African Heritage (2026–2036).

Events leading up to the vote—including a memorial ceremony in New York and a high-level UN discussion—signal that this is more than a diplomatic gesture. It’s a coordinated push to turn historical acknowledgment into tangible global action.

Ghana is now calling on all UN member states to back the resolution, framing it as a pivotal moment in the ongoing pursuit of justice, healing, and historical truth.
