Private Sector Key to Ghana’s Solar-Powered EV Future, Energy Commission Says

Ghana’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is expected to be driven largely by private sector investment, with government policy increasingly focused on creating an enabling environment rather than direct state control.

At a stakeholder engagement in Sunyani, officials from the Energy Commission emphasised that while the shift to electric mobility is a national priority, the development of charging infrastructure will depend on private capital—particularly in solar-powered systems.

Mrs Joyce Caitlyn Ocansey, Coordinator of the Drive Electric Programme, said the government’s role is to regulate and guide the sector, while encouraging businesses to take the lead in deploying charging stations across the country.

She explained that solar-powered charging solutions have been prioritised due to their environmental benefits and alignment with Ghana’s climate commitments, positioning the country to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while expanding clean energy use.

The policy direction is also expected to open up new economic opportunities, including job creation in technical fields such as electrical installation, system maintenance, and renewable energy services.

Despite global growth in electric vehicle adoption—where EVs accounted for about 20 percent of vehicle sales in 2024—Africa remains a marginal player, contributing only about one percent. However, officials say Ghana is making steady progress, with increasing investor interest and the gradual rollout of charging infrastructure.

Speaking at the event, Professor Evans Zoya Kpamma of Sunyani Technical University underscored the importance of academic and industry collaboration in accelerating the transition.

He noted that the university’s Centre of Excellence stands ready to partner with investors and innovators to support research, training, and deployment of renewable energy technologies.

Participants at the forum were also introduced to various EV charging models and battery swap systems, particularly for motorcycles, highlighting the range of solutions available to support Ghana’s emerging electric mobility ecosystem.

As Ghana positions itself within the global shift toward clean transportation, policymakers say sustained private sector participation will be critical to scaling infrastructure and ensuring a successful transition to a greener economy.
