President John Dramani Mahama has acknowledged the ongoing national discourse on LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana, describing it as “highly emotive and sensitive,” but emphasised that the country’s immediate priorities lie elsewhere.
Speaking at a Presidential Dialogue with Civil Society Organisations at Jubilee House, Mahama stated that while the debate has sparked intense discussion, pressing issues such as education, healthcare, employment, food security, and housing remain the nation’s primary concerns.
“I explained during my recent engagement with the World Affairs Council that this is not the most important issue we face as a nation,” he said, urging that societal debates, including LGBTQ+ matters, be addressed through democratic processes, dialogue, and adherence to the rule of law.
The President also reassured that Ghana would continue to uphold its democratic values while engaging constructively with the international community on sensitive issues.
Mahama’s remarks signal a focus on socio-economic development as the government navigates contentious social debates.
