Authorities in Accra have begun urgent safety interventions on the Kaneshie footbridge after structural assessments revealed serious deterioration, prompting immediate restrictions on its use.
The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, ordered the temporary closure of sections of the bridge following an inspection that exposed damaged concrete and visible metal reinforcements—clear signs of long-term wear and potential danger to pedestrians.
City officials say the decision is aimed at preventing possible accidents while engineers prepare to carry out rehabilitation works. As part of the measures, only one side of the bridge will remain accessible for now, with the other section cordoned off to allow repair work to begin.
Initial funding for the project will come from the Assembly’s internally generated funds, with expectations of additional support from central government to complete the restoration.
The Assembly has also moved to clear the area, directing traders and occupants who have been operating on and around the structure to vacate immediately. Officials noted that such activities have contributed to the bridge’s deteriorating condition by hindering routine maintenance.
Accompanying the Mayor, Frank Nkansah, Municipal Chief Executive for Ablekuma Central, highlighted the extent of the damage, including weakened structural components and rusting reinforcements.
Engineering authorities have backed the intervention, describing the bridge as being in poor condition and in urgent need of repairs. Temporary pedestrian alternatives, including designated crossing points along the busy stretch of the Dr. Busia Highway, are expected to ease movement while work is ongoing.
Residents have been urged to comply with the safety directives, as enforcement measures will be applied to prevent unauthorized access to restricted sections.
