A renewed push to expand electricity access in the Nzema-East Municipality has taken a major step forward with the rollout of a large-scale streetlighting initiative aimed at improving visibility, safety, and development across communities.
Dubbed “Operation Lighten Up Evaloe Adjomoro-Gwira Constituency,” the project is being spearheaded through collaboration between the office of the Member of Parliament and the Municipal Assembly. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to extend the national electricity grid and improve energy access in underserved areas.
Under the programme, approximately 1,500 street bulbs and 250 solar panels are being distributed to light up communities, particularly those not yet connected to the national grid. Officials say the intervention targets areas that have long remained in darkness, with about 20 per cent of residents expected to benefit directly.
The streetlights will not only replace faulty installations but also introduce solar-powered solutions in off-grid communities, ensuring more sustainable access to lighting. Authorities believe the move will significantly enhance security and stimulate economic activity, especially in remote settlements.
Local officials indicated that groundwork has already been completed following assessments by energy experts, with priority areas identified for immediate installation. Communities such as Tebakrom, Bekoase, and parts of Bamiankor are among the first to benefit.
Beyond the immediate impact, the initiative aligns with a broader goal to achieve full electricity coverage across the constituency by the end of 2026. Leaders say ongoing efforts will ensure that even the most remote communities are eventually connected to the national grid.
Residents and youth leaders have welcomed the intervention, describing it as a critical step toward development, while urging authorities to follow through on implementation timelines to ensure lasting impact.
