The Eastern Regional Police Command has uncovered a major suspected narcotics operation after seizing 1,600 parcels of suspected Indian hemp and arresting three suspects linked to the consignment during an intelligence-led operation.
The operation, which also exposed an alleged GH¢100,000 bribery attempt, was carried out following a tip-off received by the Regional Police Intelligence Department (RPID) on May 10, 2026, about suspected narcotics being stored at Akosombo-Bonya.
According to a statement signed by Chief Inspector Bridget Opoku, Public Relations Officer of the Command, police officers mounted surveillance near Krobo Girls Senior High School and intercepted a Hyundai Rhino truck with registration number GR 5724-15.
The vehicle was tracked to a hidden location near Atua Government Hospital, where officers reportedly found suspects transferring sacks from the Hyundai truck into a Howo Zonda tipper truck with registration number GN 7948-21.
Upon spotting the police, the initial suspects fled into nearby bushes, but officers secured both trucks and confiscated the suspected narcotics.
Police said the situation took another dramatic turn when a suspect identified as Solomon Tettey, a 39-year-old welder and resident of Atua, later approached officers and allegedly claimed ownership of both the vehicles and the narcotics shipment.
He reportedly told police the consignment was being transported to Nigeria.
According to the statement, Tettey allegedly attempted to derail the investigation by offering officers a GH¢100,000 bribe.
Police officers reportedly played along to gather evidence, during which the suspect transferred GH¢90,000 through Mobile Money and handed over an additional GH¢10,000 in cash.
Following the transaction, officers from the Regional Counter-Terrorism Unit, supported by the Odumase Police, moved in and arrested him.
Two additional suspects, Joshua Nartey and Teye Nartey, were later arrested after reporting to the Regional Police Headquarters.
The suspects and all seized exhibits have been handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations and possible prosecution.
The Ghana Police Service says it remains committed to cracking down on drug trafficking networks and maintaining integrity in law enforcement operations.
