Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency, Kofi Kapito, has raised concerns about the mounting pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), warning that the facility is operating beyond its intended capacity.
Speaking on the issue, he said the hospital continues to receive a far higher patient load than it was originally designed for, largely due to its role as a major referral centre serving several regions across the country.
Kapito described the situation as overwhelming, noting that it was striking the facility had continued functioning under such sustained demand.
He explained that patients from the northern sector, the middle belt, and parts of the western region all rely heavily on KATH, creating significant strain on both infrastructure and healthcare personnel.
According to him, recent concerns about emergency admissions should prompt a wider national conversation about expanding healthcare infrastructure and strengthening regional hospitals to ease pressure on major referral centres.
