The Nkwanta North District has taken a major step toward strengthening its local economy with the commissioning of a new animal market at Kpassa, a development expected to enhance livestock trading and improve access for residents and business operators.
The facility was officially inaugurated by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Isaiah Cudjoe Dordoe, alongside key officials of the District Assembly, including the Presiding Member, Mr. Abubakar Alhassan, and the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Samuel Gyamena.
The commissioning ceremony attracted a wide cross-section of stakeholders, including traditional leaders, religious authorities, traders, livestock dealers, and members of the local community, reflecting broad support for the project.
Prominent among those present were the Paramount Chief of Kpassa, Ubor Konja Tassan VI, his sub-chiefs, the Chief Imam, the Zongo Chief, the Fulani Chief, and representatives of the Muslim Council.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Dordoe described the new market as a strategic investment designed to stimulate economic activity and ease the burden on residents who previously had to travel long distances to purchase livestock for ceremonies and other needs.
He explained that the facility is expected to serve as a central trading point for livestock, thereby improving supply chains and creating new opportunities for traders within the district.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the Assembly’s broader agenda of promoting local economic development, supporting livelihoods, and improving living standards across communities.
He further stressed the importance of cooperation among stakeholders in ensuring the smooth operation and long-term sustainability of the market.
“The success of this market will depend on discipline, adherence to regulations, and the collective effort of all stakeholders to maintain order and promote fair trade,” he said.
The DCE also commended the traditional authorities of Kpassa for their cooperation and support, which he said was instrumental in the successful completion of the project.
On his part, Ubor Konja Tassan VI expressed gratitude to the District Assembly and all partners involved in bringing the project to fruition.
He assured traders and residents that clear operational rules would be enforced to ensure proper management of the facility and to maintain order within the market space.
The Paramount Chief emphasized that discipline and compliance with established guidelines would be crucial to the market’s growth, warning that measures would be taken against individuals who flout regulations.
The opening of the Kpassa Animal Market is expected to strengthen livestock trade networks, boost commercial activity, and position Kpassa as an emerging hub for animal trade within the Nkwanta North District and the wider Oti Region.
