At least six people lost their lives while 34 others were rescued following a series of road traffic accidents in the Volta Region on Sunday, June 21, 2026.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said its personnel mounted swift rescue operations at separate accident scenes in the region, helping to save dozens of victims and transport the injured to health facilities for treatment.
The deadliest incidents occurred along the Todome stretch near Kpeve on the Peki–Kpeve Road, where firefighters from the Peki Fire Station responded to two separate crashes after receiving a distress call shortly before 1:00 pm.
One of the accidents involved a MAN Diesel TGS truck travelling from Tema to Tamale and a Toyota Camry travelling from Nkwanta to Accra. Five occupants, made up of four men and one woman, had already been rescued before emergency responders arrived. Both vehicles sustained partial damage.
A second crash involving a Metro Mass Transit bus carrying 28 passengers from Accra to Dambai resulted in significant casualties. Firefighters rescued 24 victims, including seven men and 17 women, and transported them to the Peki Government Hospital for medical attention.
However, four people—one man and three women—were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies were later handed over to the police for preservation and further investigations.
In a separate accident at the Ho Civic Centre, personnel from the Ho Regional Fire Headquarters responded to another emergency involving a Hyundai Mighty truck, a Pragya tricycle and an unregistered motorbike.
Ten victims were rescued from the crash and taken to the Ho Municipal Hospital and the Ho Teaching Hospital for treatment. Subsequent checks by emergency officials confirmed that two of the injured male victims later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total death toll from the day’s accidents to six.
The vehicles involved sustained varying degrees of damage, while authorities have commenced investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the crashes.
The Ghana National Fire Service has meanwhile renewed calls on motorists to strictly observe road safety regulations, avoid excessive speeding, maintain their vehicles regularly and exercise greater caution on the roads to help reduce accidents and save lives.
