Ghana’s efforts to expand its industrial base received a major boost after the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) signed a €300 million Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Italian engineering firm Danieli to establish a modern aluminium foil manufacturing plant.
The agreement, signed on June 17, 2026, at the residence of the Italian Ambassador to Ghana, is expected to accelerate the country’s ambition of moving from exporting raw bauxite to producing high-value aluminium products for both local and international markets.
The proposed Aluminium Foil Rolling Plant will be constructed at the Tema Integrated Industrial Park and is expected to produce between 40,000 and 45,000 tonnes of aluminium foil annually. The products will serve industries including food packaging, pharmaceuticals, food service, and other industrial applications.
Beyond manufacturing, the project will establish a Centre of Excellence dedicated to training, innovation, and technology transfer. The facility is expected to become a regional hub for developing skilled professionals in advanced aluminium processing technologies.
The investment is projected to generate significant direct and indirect employment opportunities while stimulating supporting industries across the aluminium value chain. It is also expected to increase Ghana’s foreign exchange earnings through value-added exports.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Danieli Group representative Danilo Dreolini said the investment demonstrates confidence in Ghana’s industrial potential and provides an opportunity for the country to transition from exporting raw materials to becoming a competitive manufacturing destination.
Chief Executive Officer of GIADEC, Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah, described the agreement as a major milestone in Ghana’s industrialisation agenda.
He said GIADEC remains committed to partnering with reputable international companies to position Ghana as a leading aluminium manufacturing hub in West Africa.
The plant will be located within the Tema Heavy Industrial Zone, which is being developed in partnership with ARISE Integrated Industrial Platforms and the Tema Development Corporation. Its strategic location near VALCO and the Tema Port is expected to strengthen export competitiveness and improve operational efficiency.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by officials from GIADEC, the Danieli Group, the Italian Embassy, and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
The partnership is being viewed as another key milestone in the government’s broader strategy to industrialise the economy, deepen local value addition, and maximise the benefits of Ghana’s rich bauxite resources.
