Youth Urged to Embrace Responsible Choices and Skills Development Amid Anti-Drug Campaign

Young people have been urged to adopt responsible lifestyle choices, build relevant skills, and avoid substance abuse in order to safeguard their future prospects.

The call was made by the Founder of the New Life Regeneration Foundation, Miss Roselyn Sena Gbetanu, during an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of a programme marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse at the Accra Technical University.

The event, organised under the theme “Prevention to Profession: Every youth must be growing up with a skill, talent or passion,” formed part of the Foundation’s broader operational framework for drug abuse prevention in senior high schools.

Miss Gbetanu encouraged young people to enjoy their youth responsibly while remaining mindful of choices that could negatively affect their long-term future.

She also advised them to build positive friendships and seek mentorship from trusted adults who can provide moral and career guidance.

According to her, the Foundation remains committed to bridging gaps between state institutions and individuals at risk of drug misuse, while promoting community-based prevention strategies.

She further disclosed plans for collaboration with traditional authorities and other stakeholders to strengthen community by-laws against drug peddling and substance abuse.

At the event, Chief Superintendent Abdul Aziz Ali, Acting Greater Accra Regional Commander of the Narcotics Control Commission Ghana, explained that drug abuse is now more broadly referred to as “substance abuse” due to the wide range of substances being misused.

He cautioned that although alcohol and tobacco are legally available, their misuse can still lead to serious consequences, including addiction and health complications.

He also warned students against misconceptions surrounding cannabis, stressing that it remains illegal and can attract prosecution or fines.

Chief Superintendent Ali further advised students not to be misled into believing drug use enhances academic performance, noting that it often undermines long-term learning outcomes.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme, Mr Eric Adjei (Esq.), encouraged students to prioritise education, remain focused, and resist peer pressure.

He urged them to embrace discipline and hard work, stressing that personal success depends on individual effort rather than external influence.

Closing the programme, Ambassador Horace Nii Ayi Ankrah reminded participants that prevention remains the most effective approach to combating drug abuse.

He encouraged them to share the knowledge gained with peers, family members, and communities to help spread awareness and reduce substance abuse among young people.
