Severe Flooding Brings Lagos to a Standstill, Exposes Urban Infrastructure Challenges

Widespread flooding triggered by heavy rainfall has once again exposed Lagos’ growing infrastructure and urban planning challenges, as large sections of Nigeria’s commercial capital were brought to a standstill on Tuesday.

The floods submerged major roads, homes, markets and businesses across both the Lagos Island and Mainland, leaving thousands of residents stranded, disrupting economic activities and forcing the temporary relocation of some flight operations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Communities including Lekki, Ajah, Agungi, Oshodi, Gbagada, Maryland, Ikeja, Ikorodu and Alakija were among the worst affected, with commuters trapped in hours-long traffic while residents struggled to rescue property from rising floodwaters.

The latest flooding occurred despite repeated warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, both of which had forecast above-normal rainfall and heightened flood risks for the 2026 rainy season.

According to international estimates, flooding, damaged infrastructure and lost productivity cost the Lagos economy billions of dollars annually, highlighting the growing economic impact of recurring climate-related disasters.

Businesses across the city also suffered significant losses as markets and shops were inundated, while transport disruptions prevented many workers from reaching their workplaces.

Operations at the temporary international terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport were also affected after floodwaters reached the facility’s powerhouse, prompting the suspension of activities and the relocation of several international airlines to another terminal.

Many residents described the floods as an annual occurrence that continues to worsen, blaming inadequate drainage systems, poor waste management, rapid urbanisation and weak enforcement of planning regulations.

Some commuters recounted hours-long journeys to work, while others reported damage to vehicles, electronic devices and household property after floodwaters overwhelmed their neighbourhoods.

The Lagos State Government described the incident as a flash flood caused by prolonged and intense rainfall, explaining that unusually high lagoon water levels had also slowed the discharge of stormwater from drainage systems.

State authorities said emergency teams were monitoring vulnerable communities and implementing measures to improve flood resilience, while urging residents to stop dumping refuse into drains and to avoid building on waterways and floodplains.

Environmental experts, however, argue that beyond extreme weather, clogged drainage channels, uncontrolled development, wetland reclamation and poor waste disposal continue to worsen flooding across the city.

Residents have called on the government to adopt long-term solutions, including regular drainage maintenance, stricter enforcement of environmental regulations and improved urban planning, warning that climate change is likely to make flooding more frequent and severe in the years ahead.
