Oti Region Turns to TVET Expansion to Tackle Youth Unemployment

The expansion of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions in the Oti Region is expected to play a key role in reducing youth unemployment and preparing young people for emerging opportunities in the labour market.

The Oti Regional Director of TVET, Mr Robert Amontcho, said the establishment of five vocational training institutes across the region represents a major step towards equipping the youth with practical skills needed for employment and entrepreneurship.

According to him, the increasing focus on skills-based education is helping to address the gap between academic qualifications and the practical competencies required by industries.

Mr Amontcho explained that modern employers are increasingly looking beyond certificates and placing greater emphasis on technical expertise, problem-solving abilities and hands-on experience.

He made the remarks after monitoring activities at some TVET institutions in the region, where he assessed training programmes and instructional methods.

He singled out the Nkwanta Vocational Training Institute for commendation, describing its training approach as a demonstration of the potential of TVET to produce competent and industry-ready graduates.

The Regional Director noted that graduates from accredited vocational institutions receive nationally recognised certificates, which improve their chances of securing jobs and competing effectively in various sectors of the economy.

He stressed that TVET should not only be viewed as a pathway to employment but also as a foundation for entrepreneurship and job creation.

According to him, many graduates of vocational institutions have gone on to establish their own businesses, creating employment opportunities for themselves and others while contributing to local economic growth.

Mr Amontcho also described technical and vocational education as an affordable alternative for young people who may not have access to university education, emphasising that it provides learners with practical skills and industry experience.

He urged parents and guardians in the region to encourage their children to consider TVET as a viable career option capable of providing decent livelihoods and supporting national development.

The Regional Director further appealed to traditional leaders, opinion leaders and residents to continue promoting peace and stability in the Oti Region, noting that a peaceful environment was essential for attracting investment and accelerating development.

He expressed optimism that continued investment by government, support from development partners and collaboration with local stakeholders would strengthen the TVET sector and produce the skilled workforce required to drive Ghana’s industrial transformation.
