Polls: 65% of Ghanaians Approve “No-Third-Term” For Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama’s decision not to seek a third term has received strong public backing, although a significant minority of Ghanaians would still support efforts to persuade him to remain in office, a new poll by Global InfoAnalytics has found.

The nationwide survey showed that 65 percent of respondents approved of the President’s decision to rule out a third-term bid, while 27 percent disagreed. Eight percent had no opinion.

The findings come amid renewed public debate over calls by some individuals for President Mahama to reconsider his position and contest beyond the constitutional two-term limit.

However, the poll found that opposition to such calls was stronger than support for them. Fifty percent of respondents said they did not support attempts to persuade the President to seek a third term, compared with 40 percent who supported such efforts. Ten percent were undecided.

The results indicate that while the majority of respondents endorse President Mahama’s stated commitment to the constitutional term limit, the question of whether he should remain in office continues to attract significant support among a section of the population.

The survey was conducted between July 15 and July 24, 2026, through computer-assisted telephone interviews.

Global InfoAnalytics said it targeted 9,242 registered voters, out of whom 7,761 completed the survey, representing an 84 percent response rate.

The poll covered all 16 regions and used the 2024 Electoral Commission voters’ register as its sampling frame. The sample was selected through probability random sampling, with regional quota limits applied.

According to the research firm, the survey has a 99 percent confidence level and a margin of error of plus or minus 1.5 percentage points.

The poll forms part of a longitudinal tracking study under which the same group of respondents will be interviewed every two months to monitor shifts in public opinion.

Under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, a president may serve a maximum of two four-year terms.

President Mahama has repeatedly stated that he will not seek a third term, saying he remains committed to respecting the constitutional limit and strengthening Ghana’s democratic institutions.
