Police Probe Alleged Extortion of Traders on Aflao–Accra Highway

The Ghana Police Service has begun moves to investigate allegations of harassment, intimidation, delays and extortion involving some personnel deployed along the Aflao–Accra main route.

The development follows growing complaints from local traders and transport operators about the conduct of some police officers at checkpoints along the busy corridor.

The concerns reportedly involve locations including the Tokor Barrier, Ativuta Toll Booth and the Weta–Afiadenyigba Junction Barrier, as well as other checkpoints towards Sogakope.

The allegations came to public attention after a viral Facebook post accused some police personnel stationed along the route of demanding receipts for goods being transported by local traders.

According to the allegations, traders who are unable to produce the required documentation are sometimes subjected to delays and allegedly asked to pay money before being allowed to continue their journeys.

The Joint Association of Port Transport Unions (JAPTU) has subsequently appealed to senior police authorities to intervene and address the concerns.

JAPTU said its primary concern was not necessarily the existence or number of police checkpoints along the route, but the alleged conduct of some personnel at the checkpoints.

The association cited complaints of unnecessary delays, intimidation and alleged extortion of traders and transport operators travelling along the route.

The matter has since attracted the attention of the police hierarchy.

Police sources indicate that the Volta Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Akorli, has engaged the Inspector-General of Police on the allegations and is taking steps to establish the facts surrounding the complaints.

As part of the regional response, DCOP Akorli has scheduled a meeting with all Divisional and District Police Commanders in the region for Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The meeting is expected to focus on the allegations and assess the conduct of personnel operating at the affected checkpoints, while determining appropriate measures to address concerns raised by traders and transport operators.

Personnel deployed to the locations identified in the complaints have also been cautioned against any form of misconduct.

The Police Administration is further constituting an inspection team to visit the affected areas, identify personnel who may have been involved in the alleged acts and investigate the complaints.

The move is expected to help determine whether the allegations have merit and ensure that appropriate action is taken against any officer found to have breached professional standards.

The police response comes amid growing concerns over the impact of checkpoint-related delays and alleged misconduct on commercial activities along the Aflao–Accra corridor, a key route for the movement of people and goods.

Authorities are therefore expected to balance legitimate policing and security requirements with the need to ensure that traders and other road users are treated fairly and lawfully.

The outcome of the planned inspection and subsequent investigations is expected to determine the next steps by the Police Administration.
