Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has pushed back against expectations that his friendship with dancehall artiste Stonebwoy should determine the people he associates with, insisting that maintaining relationships with others should not be interpreted as taking sides.
Sarkodie said his interactions with people who may have had disagreements or conflicts with Stonebwoy should not automatically be viewed as a sign of disloyalty or support for their actions.
He made the comments while responding to concerns raised by Stonebwoy about their relationship and the rapper’s association with individuals who had allegedly disrespected him.
According to Sarkodie, he does not expect Stonebwoy to interpret his personal friendships as deliberate attempts to undermine their relationship.
“You hang out with people who have disrespected me, but there’s no way I would assume that means you support their disrespect towards me, because you have nothing to do with it,” Sarkodie said.
The rapper argued that the same understanding should apply to his own relationships, stressing that he should be free to maintain friendships without being expected to account for the actions or history of the people involved.
Sarkodie also pointed to Stonebwoy’s decision to invite him to his RAH show as evidence that there was no fundamental hostility between them.
“If I had any issues with you, I wouldn’t have been the one to pick up the phone, call you, and invite you to my RAH show,” he said.
He questioned the basis for what he described as an expectation that he owed Stonebwoy a particular form of loyalty or explanation regarding his friendships.
“Yet you seem to feel I owe you something that simply doesn’t exist,” he said.
Sarkodie’s comments suggest that he sees their relationship as one that should allow both artistes to maintain independent friendships without those associations becoming a measure of their loyalty to each other.
His response comes amid renewed discussion about the relationship between the two high-profile Ghanaian artistes and the expectations surrounding their personal and professional associations.
