Ningo clans look to new Paramount Chief to resolve longstanding disputes

The restoration of substantive paramountcy in the Ningo Traditional Area has raised fresh hopes among traditional clans that longstanding disputes can now be resolved through established traditional mechanisms.

The Luwekponor Okuben Wem and Luwekponor Okuben Clans have welcomed Nene Osroagbo Djangmah XII as the Paramount Chief of Ningo, expressing confidence that his ascension will provide the traditional authority needed to promote unity, peace and development.

The clans said the installation of a substantive paramount chief after more than four decades without one presented an important opportunity to strengthen traditional leadership and address disputes that had persisted in some communities.

They said the traditional authority would provide a platform for clans and communities to bring matters of concern before the Paramount Chief for guidance, mediation and resolution.

At a welcome ceremony for Nene Djangmah, Nene Nii Laryae Diwohene I, Chief of Nungua Klagon, appealed to the new Paramount Chief to intervene in a dispute within the Luwekponor Okuben Clan that has persisted since 2014.

He said tensions emerged following the installation of another person as Asafoatse alongside Asafoatse Ashalley Kweitsu Okuben IV.

Nene Diwohene appealed to the Paramount Chief to help settle the matter, maintaining that Asafoatse Ashalley Kweitsu Okuben IV remained the duly recognised and gazetted Asafoatse of the clan.

The Family Secretary, Mr Emmanuel Quaye, also presented a petition to the Paramount Chief on behalf of Asafoatse Ashalley Kweitsu Okuben IV concerning a separate dispute involving one of the five gates within the wider Okuben Clan.

Mr Quaye alleged that the gate had begun operating independently and was making claims to lands belonging to the wider clan.

He warned that the situation could further divide members of the clan if left unresolved and appealed to the Paramount Chief to employ established traditional processes to settle the matter.

According to him, timely intervention would help safeguard the interests of the wider Okuben Clan and prevent the disagreements from escalating into deeper divisions.

Receiving the petitions, Nene Osroagbo Djangmah XII assured the clans that their concerns would receive the necessary attention.

He said the issues would be addressed through dialogue and established traditional processes, signalling his readiness to use the authority of the traditional institution to help restore peace and cohesion.

The Luwekponor Okuben Clan subsequently pledged its support and cooperation to the Paramount Chief and his elders as they worked to strengthen unity and development within the traditional area.

The clans expressed confidence that the restoration of paramountcy would provide a renewed avenue for resolving internal disputes and promoting peaceful coexistence among the various communities and traditional authorities within Ningo.

They said their support for Nene Djangmah was anchored in the expectation that the restored traditional leadership would help consolidate peace, provide direction on longstanding matters and contribute to the overall development of the Ningo Traditional Area.
